I set up a little light box last night to try my hand at some product shots...I used a new pair of Sketchers as my subject. Triple Screen Set Up

I have two Acer 22" Widescreen monitors (@1680x1050) on the bottom w/ a 15" Proview (@1024x768) on top. I went with this set up for web development, it was hard working out site formatting on the ultra wide screens so I added the little guy up there to have a standard resolution reference point. When I'm not developing I use it for iTunes or Tweet Deck. I achieved this with a ATI Radeon 2600 HD card for the 22's and a USB2VGA adapter for the 15" P.S. - Anyone know where I can find drivers to hack my Casio Exilm and make it a 4th mini screen for displaying system information?

Smirk - Retouch Comparison

Just playing around with some new skin retouching techniques I learned from Joel Grimes and the RetouchPRO Video Tutorial 'Pointy Man', by Amy Dresser. Joel Grimes Lighting Video on YouTube Lighting Info: - 3 light set up, all AlienBee B800's - Two gridded strip boxes on either side and behind subject - 22" gridded beauty dish directly in front of subject, and just above camera (almost touching) To quote Joel Grimes: (For those that are sick of seeing Fred and the same style post processing... ) "No doubt some of you may be saying, “This looks like the same old thing over and over again”. Well, there is some truth to that. However, repetition often breeds perfection. Ask Tiger Woods how he has become the greatest golfer in the world. I hate to sound like a broken record, but hard work will always out perform talent any day the week. When you look at some of my earlier sports images I believe you can say that they have dramatically gotten better with time. This is due to one thing, repetition. I can’t be afraid to beat a subject matter or approach into the ground. In the process I may receive some criticism along the way, but in the end if I work hard, I will out perform my critics." This is why you'll be seeing a lot of Fred :)

my set-up

In progress... Haven't had the studio all set up like this since June due to putting everything away for non-stop renovation projects [i.e. insulating walls, patching holes in the wall due to insulating, re-painting the walls + ceiling]. Nice to have my room getting back to normal again. Many thanks to J's rents for touching up the paint + installing the new ceiling fan in my studio during their stay. I had an awesome morning today! Great sunrise, mist and horses in the mist. It is my birthday tomorrow and we are going to sort out the stuff to do the kingfishers (Set up the hide, a perch etc) and hopefully we might get some shots over the next ....

My new desk set-up

I wanted to be a bit closer to the rest of the team, so they put me in the corner. Which works out nicely, as you can see from my lovely new set-up. I have walls to put stuff on, actual sunlight coming from the tiny window, and I don't feel so exposed as I did when I was in the middle of the office. All in all, it's a win.

Greece to set up internment camps for immigrants

The Greek daily Nea newspaper reported that the government was in the process of setting up internment camps for illegal immigrants throughout the country. Eleven disused army bases have been chosen in order to house those found without legal residency documents. Stung by their losses in the recent European elections the ruling conservative New Democracy party has taken a sharp turn to the right in order to win back dissatisfied voters who’s defected to the far right LAOS party in last week’s elections. In addition the police have made hundreds of arrests of suspected illegal immigrants in the centre of Athens in an action which has been interpreted as a “get tough” message by the government of Kostas Karamanlis to the party’s base following months of falling opinion poll results brought on by a series of corruption scandals and unhappiness with Athens’s handling of Greece’s deepening recession. However, many opposition groups are doubtful whether the proposed measures will be anything other than a publicity exercise. Despite recent crackdowns the government has failed to formulate a coherent policy concerning the integration of the country’s 1 million foreign born inhabitants. Nothing more reflects Greece’s sometimes schizophrenic attitude to immigration than the plight of those in the port city of Patra, one of the country’s gateway’s to Europe. Everyday hundreds of refugees from Afghanistan and other east Asian countries attempt to smuggle themselves aboard trucks headed for Italy. Most have no legal documents and given the fact that less than 1% who apply for asylum are granted it very little chance of ever obtaining legal travel documents. Desperate to leave Greece, the state has made it virtually impossible for them to travel, resulting in hundreds of thousands stuck in a bureaucratic limbo in which they are constantly at risk of arrest and deportation by the police. Even those who do escape face the risk of being sent back to Greece under the terms of the EU’s Dublin II regulations which states that immigrants have to apply for asylum in the first European Union country they reach. However, countries such as Holland, Finland and Norway have suspended such agreements citing lapses and abuses of the asylum laws in Greece, especially concerning minors. Growing concerns over immigration have been exploited by Greece’s far right parties and organisations in order to raise their public profile and gain political leverage in parliament. Giorgos Karatzaferis, leader of the nationalist LAOS party used the recent elections to promote his party’s anti - immigration policies. In addition ultra - nationalists groups such as the neo - Nazi Chrysi Aygi (New Dawn) have stepped up attacks on immigrants in Athens. The recent clamp downs by the police have also worried Greece’s human rights groups who have often accused the police of illegal treatment of non - ethnic Greek groups. Also organisations such as Amnesty International and Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) have repeatedly condemned the country’s police and prison system of human rights abuses. In addition United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) criticised the country over its treatment of asylum seekers. Case in point is the capital’s Petrou Ralli police station which has been repeatedly been connected with the suspicious deaths of Asian immigrants in the area. Three have been found dead, dumped in a river bed 500 metres away from the station in the area in the last eight months alone. This is not the first time that internment camps have been used in the history of modern Greece. During the military junta which ruled from 1967 to 1974 the state set up camps on the Greek islands to imprison and torture political dissidents.

I'm back - kinda. We moved house recently, and on top of just being too busy decorating to get the camera out, and not having desks to set up the PC on - we still don't have broadband... Once I'd cleared enough space, I did have time every now and then to get some shots of the spider that kept spinning webs on the other side of the double glazing in the living room, which let me get really quite close with the FD 50mm macro lens.
